A charming town garden where an orchard used to be

20 years ago fruit trees lined a space hidden in the centre of this small market town, now, the consequence of much love and perseverance, it is an admirable garden.   Every single meticulously chosen plant has earned its place thanks to those that were never planted, and over the years the few that had to be culled after much consideration and often regret, to allow sufficient space for the unimpeded development of those left.   Skilful pruning to attain the optimum shape, and composting to give them natural vigour means that these plants are now fine trees or shoulder high shrubs. The tidy lawn sets the plants off to their best advantage and you are treated to a constant display of shifting light and shadow throughout the day.   The ancient walls are festooned with climbers, a rockery of richly assorted silver leaved plants lines the house, while hidden treasures wait to be discovered in the courtyard as you come in. A worthwhile visit that ordinary plant lovers and experts alike will revel in.

• Open for Neurodon the 29-30 April and 1st May from 10.00 to 12.30, for the Rendez-vous aux jardins the 2-3 June from 10.00 to 12.30 and 14.30 to 18.30, and for “Journées européennes du patrimoine”, the 15-16 September, from 10.00 to 12.30.
• Visit also possible preferably in the morning, by prior arrangement in May, June, September and October (just ring 2-3 days beforehand).
• Admission : 3 €, free for kids, reduced fees for groups of more than 10 and members of Horticultural Societies, except during the 3 official visits (all the profits are donated to the French League against Cancer for the Rendez-vous aux jardins)

• At the castle of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, go towards Portbail, take the 1^st right after the church, rue Catherine de Longpré, then the 1^st right again, rue Croix d’Epines, the garden is opposite No 4.
